Writer: BarryBarry

When I first set my sights on Koh Chang, I was instantly captivated. This stunning island in Thailand is often referred to as a hidden gem. Its vibrant culture, breathtaking beaches, and opportunities for exciting adventures surprised me at every turn. In this post, I’ll take you through my unforgettable experience in Koh Chang, the ideal duration for your visit, the best time to plan your trip, and practical tips on how to get there. And yes, I’ll include a funny fact that made me laugh!

General Info About Koh Chang

Koh Chang, or “Elephant Island,” is Thailand's second largest island, located in the eastern Gulf of Thailand. It features lush jungles, tranquil waterfalls, and stunning beaches.

One of the most exciting aspects of Koh Chang is its diverse landscape. Beyond sunbathing, the island invites you to hike through dense rainforests, dive into colorful coral reefs, or simply relax in a hammock with a good book.

Koh Chang is part of an archipelago that includes several smaller islands. The main town, White Sand Beach, offers a vibrant nightlife and delicious dining options. For a quieter experience, places like Kai Bae Beach and Lonely Beach provide a more peaceful atmosphere, perfect for unwinding.

How Many Days Do You Need for Koh Chang?

If you're wondering how long to linger in Koh Chang, I wholeheartedly suggest a minimum of five days.

Why is this timeframe so important? Koh Chang's charm lies in its many offerings. Here are a few highlights of what I experienced:

  • Beach Time: I spent blissful hours at Kai Bae Beach, where the gentle waves and soft sands made relaxation a delight.

  • Water Sports: I tried snorkeling at Bang Bao Beach, where I encountered colorful fish and vibrant coral. It was a highlight of my trip.

  • Hiking: A memorable hike to the Klong Plu Waterfall rewarded me with a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters.

Every day was filled with activities, but I also had ample time for downtime to soak in the island's laid-back atmosphere. The longer you stay, the more extraordinary experiences await you.

When is the Best Period to Visit Koh Chang?

Timing your visit to Koh Chang can greatly enhance your experience. The ideal time to explore this paradise is between November and February. This period marks the dry season, where you can enjoy sunny days and comfortable temperatures averaging around 25-30°C (77-86°F).

During my December visit, the weather was perfect for lounging on the beach, visiting local markets, and engaging in outdoor adventures. The island is alive with vibrant community festivals during this time, adding an authentic touch to your experience.

Conversely, the monsoon season, which spans May to September, can bring heavy rains, affecting outdoor plans. During these months, the island sees a dip in tourist numbers, and while it can be less crowded, the weather can be unpredictable.

How to Go to Koh Chang

Getting to Koh Chang may seem intimidating at first, but the journey is quite straightforward.

Start by traveling to Trat, a charming town on the mainland. From Bangkok, you can choose a bus or a train, both options take approximately 5-6 hours, making it accessible for travelers. Upon reaching Trat, catch a ferry to one of Koh Chang’s piers. This scenic ferry ride lasts about 30 minutes and offers stunning views of the island as you approach.

As an adventurous traveler, I loved this ferry ride! The wind in my hair and the spectacular sights set the tone for my island adventure.

Once you arrive, local taxis, known as songthaews, are readily available to take you to your accommodation or your first beach visit.

A Funny Fact About Koh Chang

Here's a quirky tidbit that still makes me laugh! Koh Chang remained off the radar for many Western tourists until the late 1990s when a popular guidebook finally featured it. This exposure led to a surge in visitors who realized they had been missing out on a beautiful paradise.

Now, discovering Koh Chang has become a rite of passage for travelers, and I was thrilled to be part of that journey. This amusing history highlights how some of the best destinations can remain hidden until curiosity leads us to uncover them.

A Memorable Adventure Awaits

My journey exploring Koh Chang was nothing short of enchanting. With its breathtaking beaches, rich culture, and diverse activities, this island is a must-visit. Five days may feel like a significant amount of time, but you will appreciate every moment spent unwinding, exploring, and embracing the island lifestyle.

So gather your essentials, grab your sunscreen, and prepare for an unforgettable adventure in Koh Chang. Whether you are an adventure seeker or someone looking to relax, this island is sure to delight.

Happy travels, and may your own adventures lead you to wonderful places just like Koh Chang!
